This tutorial is written for PSP 7 and assumes you have a basic knowledge of the PSP 7 interface as well as most of its tools. You will also need Eyecandy 4000 and KPT 5 for this tutorial. You can download the heart zip here.

Open the heart image from above. Duplicate the layer 4times and rename the first one outline, the second one blade bottom, the third one blade middle, and then the fourth one handle. Working on the blade bottom layer, choose the magic wand and set your tolerance to about 35. Working on the outline layer click on the black outline of the heart to select it, make sure you have all the outline/black selected. You should see your marching ants around your heart. (Fig.H1) Choose Effects/Plugins/Eyecandy and select the Chrome filter.

Choose a silver colored setting from the presets menu. You may need to play with the settings a little bit to get the exact effect you want but by choosing a preset it gives you somewhere to start. Once you are happy with the settings be sure to save it incase you need it again by choosing the save option under settings and then just name the preset. Click Ok/Apply to apply the effect to your image. Make SURE you applied it to the correct layer, the OUTLINE layer. Now choose SELECTIONS and then save to alpha channel. Name the selection outline. Choose selections and then select none.

Next click on your bottom blade layer to make it the active layer and choose the magic wand tool again. Keep the settings the same and select the bottom portion of your sword. Then hold down your shift key to add a selection to the existing selection so that you have both sides of the bottom portion of the blade selected. Then choose selections and then expand, expand the selection by two (2). This was we make sure to get all of the white area and that none will show through later. Choose your EC 4000 Filter again and select chrome again as well.

Working on the bottom blade layer still and having your EC 4000 Chrome filter selected, select another silver to start with. Try to make it a little different that what you used on the trim so that you can distinguish between the trim and the blades. Adjust the bevels to help with lighting and appearance til you get the desired effect. Once happy with your choice save it incase you want to use it again later by choosing save from the settings menu, then name your preset. Click ok to apply the effect to your image.(Fig.h4) Choose selections and select none. Now go to selections and load from alpha channel and choose the outline selection we saved in the last step and then hit your delete key. We can now see the chrome outline we did first and the bottom part of our blade colored silver now. Choose selections and select none. Click on the top blade layer to make it the active layer if it isn't and select the magic wand tool again and select the two areas of the blade at the top like you did for the bottom. Then choose selections, expand and then expand them by 2. Choose the EC 4000 chrome filter again and just apply the same setting to the top blade portion of your sword. Click ok/apply when happy. You should now have two blade areas on your sword. Now go to the alpha channel again and load the outline selection and then hit the delete key again to remove the black outline of that layer so that we can see the outline chrome we made in the first step. Choose selections and select none. Now choose the magic wand again and select the bottom sword portion on the top sword layer and expand by two (2). Then hit the delete key so we can see the bottom portion of the sword.

Now we are going to switch filters real quick to do the handle of the sword. Download the zip file here with the preset. It is a 'pearlish' looking preset. If you want to make your own in KPT 5 then please feel free. In your layers palette click on the handle layer to make it the active layer and then choose the magic wand tool and select one side of the handle, choose selections and expand 2 again. Apply the KPT 5 shapeshifter preset to the selection (or your own) and then hit ok. Repeat for the other side of the handle and the knobs on the end of the handles and at the top of the sword. It may be tempting to select them all at one time and apply the presets but you really get a better effect if you select each small section by itself and expand by 2, then apply preset and select a whole new area each time until you have them all filled. Each time you select an area make sure you expand it by 2 so that you get all the white area coverd and it won't show through. Once finished choose selections and then select none. (Fig.h6) Then on the handle layer load the outline selection from the alpha channel again and hit the delete key to remove the black so that we can see the outline of chrome we did. Choose selections and select none. Working on the same layer now choose the magic wand tool and select the bottom portions of the blade areas and hit the delete key to remove the white so that we can see the blades. Then repeat for the top blade area ON the handle layer. You should now see the blades, the outline and the pearlized handles of the sword. (Fig.h7)

Note--If at anytime after deleting areas where you think you should see something and don't, toggle your layers palette and make sure you have the proper areas removed (the white area) so that if anything is below it (under the white) will show up.

Now click on the background layer and duplicate it again and then rename it heart. Choose the magic wand tool and select the inside part of the heart. Choose selections and then expand by 2. Click on the handle layer and choose delete, click the next layer and choose delete, repeat until you get to the new layer named heart and then choose your Eyecandy 4000 Chrome filter again. Choose the Crimson preset from the settings drop down menu and then make sure to click on the Basic tab and choose the brick wallpaper selection at the top. Once you have fiddled with the settings to get a nice "heart red" choose ok/apply to apply the effect to your image. If you like the preset remeber you can save it from the settings menu.

Now choose selections and select none. Click on the background layer to make it the active layer and grab the magic wand tool. Click once on the white area around the entire image, choose selections, modify and expand it by 2. Choose selections again but this time choose invert. Then selections, modify and feather 2. Choose selections, save to alpha channel and name it fuzz or something like that. Click ok when finished. Then go to image and canvas resize, make sure your bg color is set to white and increas the canvas size a little so that we have some extra white areas at the top, bottom and sides.

Now since we have a larger canvas we won't risk our 'feathering' around the heart off the edge of the image. Click the background layer and duplicate the layer once more and then renam it to feather/fuzz or something like that. Load the fuzz selection on the fuzz layer and then choose the Eyecandy 4000 Corona filter. Click ok to apply the effect to your image. If you do not see the red around your heart like you did in the EC preview window, click each layer above it and make sure you have removed the areas that might be covering it by using the magic wand tool.

Your layers palette and heart should resemble mine somewhat. If you are still not seeing parts of your heart check the layers palette to see if they are in the right order and hold mouse over each layer to see if they have all of the covering white areas removed.

If you are happy with your effects then merge and flatten all layers. Add a frame or whatever else you want to the image. If you would like to see a couple different variations of the completed effect go here.
