Making a old looking newspaper with the new filters in PSP 7, beta 3.  First off you will need to think of a name you want to use for your paper and some info to put inside of it.  Or you can just follow along with mine here and copy the text and info I have used.  This is soley for fun and entertainment and I did NOT write the actual press release in my newspaper.  It can be found on the Jasc site under press releases.

Right click start, then choose EXPLORE
Step 1

Open new image 500 x 400, white, 16 million colors.  Add a new layer and choose the shapes tool and set it to rectangle, black.  Make sure that your texture is set to NULL like you see in mine here.  Draw out a rectangle across the image towards the top on the new layer.  Make it about 490 wide by 30 tall.  If you don't get the exact don't worry about it since we created as vector you can adjust it accordingly to closer if you need too.  Then choose LAYERS and PROMOTE TO RASTER.

Step 2

Windoze Explorer allows you to easily create foldersWorking on the new layer with the black shape and choose the EFFECTS, TEXTURES and BLINDS.  Set to match mine like on the right here.  Then choose LAYERS, MERGE AT FLATTEN.

Step 3

Choose the airbrush tool and set your settings like mine on the right.  Size 255, 78 hardness, 5 opacity, 39 step, and 20 density. Make sure your foreground color in the style palette is set to the light grey, and the background set to Null. In the textures tab choose the textures from the flyout using the same method as you did with the style and choose texture and then click it once to bring up the selections and select the crumpled paper 2 texture from the list and click ok.  Make sure you have the bg texture set to NULL.

Step 4

Create extra folders to keep them organized.Lightly brush the entire surface of your canvas, just enough to give it some depth.  Not to much though. Be sure to brush over the lines we made as well so that they will blend in good with the background.

Add some large bold text for a headline.Step 5

Now add another layer and choose the text tool, let's make a headline for the newspaper.  Doesn't have to be anything fancy.  Make it black and bold for the head line, I chose the font hobbyheadline which you can grab here if you want it.  Set the background style to black and the foreground style to NULL and type in the heading of your paper.  I made mine PSP Daily News just for grins.

Add another layer and add the date, Volume number and I slipped in a little price on the side, 25 cents, like you can find a paper for that now days !  LOL Position them under the headline but above the rectangle shape that we made. My thumbnail is pretty small and hard to see here but you can click it and a new window will open with it full size (top portion of image only) if you need to see it full size.  Now you can add your content and some extra "lines and stuff" for designs.

Once you have all the content you want and positioned.  You should have something similar to mine here but with your content, headlines etc.  Save your image as a psp file so you don't risk losing it since this is a beta, things happen unexpectedly and often! ;o(  Make a duplicate copy (contrl-D) Merge all layers and Flatten.  (Click thumb to see full size)

Step 8

Choose EFFECTS, ARTISTIC then the AGED NEWSPAPER.  Depending on what you have you can adjust this to a higher or lower number but for a starting guideline you can use mine, I set it to 63.  The more you apply the filter the darker and more blurry the image will become, so just adjust accordingly to your taste.

Step 9

Now at this point you can do several things.  I used the UNSHARP mask filter on mine a little and also darkened it just a tad more, you can also do so if you like choosing COLORS and then BRIGHTNESS/CONTRAST. Or EFFECTS, SHARPEN and unsharp mask.
I used a mask and created a paper that looked like it had torn edges.  I added pages for the multiple page look.  I also used another mask and gave the edges a (on fire look).  There are several ways you can go with this, choose your ending from the list below, if it is not linked then I have not yet completed that ending but there are a couple there now you can try and play around with..  To see the completed samples again go back to TOP where they are at if you are not sure what you want.
