Multiple Tubes in one

On the last page I had you create a simple single tube but if you have downloaded any tubes from the internet then you have probably noticed that a lot of times the tube will have more than one image in them and are wondering how this is done. It is not as hard as it seems. Let's try it!!!

We need some images to work with for this so if you don't have any to use you can download the zip here that I used. It is best to use the same images I am using for the purpose of this tutorial so that you can learn how to create the tubes and then you can go on to using your own images. They are in PSP format and are zipped, if you don't have a unzipping utility then you can grab winzip from http://www.winzip.com. Unzip the images to a folder and then open them all in PSP. You should have 6 images open in PSP at this point. Now one thing that is important in making tubes where there are several images in the ones tube is to make sure they are all close to the same size. I have resized these all to 150 pixels wide and they are already on a transparent bg at this point to simplify things for the tutorial. IF you decided to use your own image then you will need to go back to the first page of creating a single tube to learn how to remove the white bg so that they are on a tranparent background and NOT on the white. Your canvas should show all the open images once you have them open, click the title bar of the images and move them off to the side for a moment. (FIG.1)

Now we have siz (6) images that are all 150 pixels wide. We need to get them all on to one (1) image so we need to take 150 (the width) and then multipy it by the number of tubes we want to go from left to right. With 6 image I usually go with 3, so 3 of them at 150 wide gives us 450, remember that number. Now we have different heights for the hearts so you have to find the LARGEST one. The tallest image we have in the hearts is 169 pixels high, it is heart number 1, it is best to round it off so we will say 170. That gives us 450 wide new image we need and it will need to be 340 tall since we have three (3) going across, we will need two (2) going down, giving us the total number of our images. Clear as mud? LOL I know it's a little confusing right now, hang in there you will understand soon. Just go to FILE and then NEW IMAGE and create a new image with a transparent bg, make sure it is 24 million in colors or you won't be able to have the transparency for the background, set the background to TRANSPARENT if it is not already set. (FIG.2)

Now with the new image open in PSP, click on heart number one to make it the active image and choose EDIT and then COPY. Then click once back on the title bar of your new image and choose EDIT and then PASTE AS NEW LAYER. Don't worry about positioning it right now. Then repeat the process with your heart images 2-6 until you have them all pasted as a new layer on to the new image that you created. Once you have them all there select the mover tool and move the images apart so that you can see them more clearly. If you do not have your rulers on, now is a good time to turn them on since they will help you to align them easier. (Choose VIEW from the menu and then RULERS). Now remember we have to make sure that each one does not exceed our maxium limit of width where they are positioned on the canvas. Each one was allowed 150 wide so move the first tube to the very top left corner of your canvas, making sure the outer right most part of the heart does NOT go past the 150 mark on your ruler. Then repeat the process starting the second heart at the 150 mark on the rulers, making sure not to go past the 300 point on your ruler. Repeat again for the third heart this time starting at the 300 mark, start each one where the last one ended. This last one should go all the way to the end of your image. (FIG.3) You can close the heart images now if you have them all on the NEW IMAGE CANVAS to get them out of your way if you like. Also make sure that they don't pass the limit on height as well which was 170. I have marked them with arrows.

Now we need to do the same thing with the last three (3) hearts on the bottom row. Set the first one starting at 0, ending at 150 by your rulers. Then start the second one at 150 ending at 300. Start the last one at 300 going to the edge of your image. You can see how I have mine set here. The are in no particular order, I just played with them until I found the way for them to best fit together. Sometimes this takes some playing around with the images especially if they are odd shaped like some of these hearts are.

Now we are ready to export our tube so head over to the next page for that and I will see you there !!
