Tubes are fun !! And they are so simple to make and get addicted to! Here we will create a simple tube, nothing fancy just a simple image so you can understand how they work and be on your way to creating your own boootiful tubes. You will need an image, any image with a simple white background is best for now, later if you want to try more complicated tubes and selecting objects out of actual photographs instead of clip-art you can visit my Selections Tutorials and learn how to use the different options. If you need an image just to practice along with please feel free to grab one off my Resources page. These images are STRICTLY for learning purposed and are NOT to be used commercially or otherwise.

Single Tube

Open the new image you have in PSP. First thing you need to know is that in order to create a tube it must be MORE than 256 colors, so if you opened a gif image in PSP you will need to go to COLORS/INCREASE COLORS to 16 million. Otherwise you will not be able to delete any of the white area around the tube to create a transparency. I will be using the XXXXX image from the resource page if you would like to follow along with me, I find it helps me to learn better if I can follow a tutorial first with the same image the author uses to ensure I am doing things correctly as I go along. Choose the magic wand tool , click the control palette and set the settings like mine. Click once in the white area surrounding the barbie and you will see your marching ants appear. If it doesn't look like you got a lot of white, go back to the control palette and change the tolerance setting to a higher number, this will allow you to "grab more of the white" into your selection.

Now we need to get rid of the white so that we have a transparency for the tube, All tubes must be at least 24 bit in color, have only one layer, and tranparency. To do this with an image like this that has a background we have to promote the background to a layer, if we try and delete the white at this point we will see whatever the background color is set to on the color palette so click on the layers palette and then right click the background layer, choose PROMOTE TO LAYER.(Fig.1) Your background layer should then change to a new layer caller layer 1. (Fig.2)

Now we also want to have smooth edges, this is what I usually do, after time you will find some people that do it differently and will probably also find your own way of doing it but for now you can use this as a guideline to get you started. Choose SELECTIONS and then expand by 1. Then choose SELECTIONS again and this time choose INVERT. Your marching ants should now be just the OPPOSITE of what your original selection was, surrounding the barbie. (Fig.3) Now to give the soft edge choose SELECTIONS again and this time choose FEATHER, set it to the same as we expanded, 1. Then choose EDIT, CUT. You will see the barbie disappear from the image. Then choose EDIT and PASTE AS NEW IMAGE. The barbie should appear as a new image with a tranparent background (checkerboard). (Fig.4)

Now we have our barbie ready to export as a tube. Choose FILE then EXPORT and PICTURE TUBE. A new dialog box will open. Leave all the default numbers the same and just give the tube a name and click ok when finished.

Now you should have your tube ready to use. Open a new image by going to FILE and then NEW IMAGE. Just make it 400 x 400 white background and 24 million in colors. Click the tubes tool on the toolbar and then click the control palette to show the thumbnails of the tubes you have. Click the arrow beside the thumb(Fig.5) to expand the view of the thumbnails and click the new tube you just made. (Fig.6)

The SCALE is the size of the tube. If you want it at the original size you made the tube at then you can leave it at 100. Turn it down to about 30 and then click once on your canvas, you should see a small barbie appear(Fig.7), then go back and increase the size a little to about 50 and click once again beside the other barbie.(Fig.8) You can increase the size all the way to 200 and just click and drag bunches of barbies or you can set different angles and the whole works. See more detailed explanations and creating multipple tubes on the next page.
