A couple of changes here.  If you are new to PSP completely with version 7 beta please ignore all the babble when I say changes from previous versions, I am just referencing back to users who had used 5 or 6 already.  Choose the FILE from the text menu at the top and find the PREFERENCES and click there, then when the next one opens click the GENERAL selection for now.  You will then be presented with the dialog box.  These are our "basic preferences".  Things controlled here are:

  • Undo space usage

  • Grid Colors

  • Color displays

  • Thumbnail sizes

  • Undo/Redo usage

  • Resolution

  • Window Sizes

  • Zoom factors

Below are all of the tabs that you should see when you open the general preferences, each has an explanation or brief summary of what each tab is specifically about.  These are mostly "personal", people's are set different all over the place so you don't like the setting I am showing on mine please feel free to "tinker" with them to your liking.  Mine are intended to be a guideline only.

  • Thumbnail size:  Mine is set to 80.  You can make them larger or smaller which ever you like.  This is what the thumb size of the images shown in the browser window will look like.

  • Appearance:  The selection color is the highlight color that will be around your image when selected in the browser window.

  • Save Browser files to disk:  This option allows the browser to save "what it has seen" so that the next time you "browse" the folder it will not have to "read " them all over again.

  • Display Flat Style Thumbs:  I find it easiest this way.  Especially for printing. If you don't like it, you can always change it later.  Compare the two HERE.

  • Automatically update the thumbnails:  I say yes.  Easiest.

These are pretty much the same as in 6.  Some of the other options have changed though so let's move on to the next tab, the Dialogs and Palettes tab.

  • Display large text/icons:  If you have trouble seeing them smaller then by all means do it.  But keep it mind it will take up more of your canvas (work space).  Compare the two HERE.

  • Display Flat toolbars:  This again is purely personal.  I like flat. Compare the two here.

  • Display Menu Icons: This controls whether or not there are icons corresponding with the text action in the drop down menus.  HERE

  • Remember last file type: When you select the "Remember last type used in file save-as dialog," the Save As dialog box automatically displays the file format previously used.

  • Decimal Display: You can display the HSL and RGB color values in decimal or hexadecimal format.

  • Hexadecimal display You can display the HSL and RGB color values in decimal or hexadecimal format.  Web browsers use the hexadecimal format so go with that for now.

  • Show rainbow picker: This option determines how the Color palettes display the colors available for use in one with 256 or fewer colors. When you choose the Rainbow Picker option, the Available Colors panel displays the same color options no matter how many colors the image contains.

  • Show document Palette: When you choose the Document palette option, the Available Colors panel displays only the colors that you can use when working with an image of 256 or less colors.

  • Use standard windows picker: PSP provides two color dialog boxes: the default Paint Shop Pro color dialog box and the standard Windows color dialog box. This new one with PSP is butt-ugly to say the least but more effective than the windows one.  Compare the two Here

Questions?

  • Zooming: The Zooming options determine if Paint Shop Pro automatically resizes an image window when you zoom in or zoom out. A window is resized to include as much of the image as will fit.
  • New Images: When checked , if you open an image that is too large to fit in its image window, PSP automatically resets the image’s magnification so that the entire image is visible.
  • After changing size: When checked, PSP automatically resizes the image window whenever you resize an image. If you increase an image’s size to more than can fit in its window, PSP  reduces the image’s magnification accordingly.

Questions?

  • Enable the Undo:  Checking this box enables the Undo and Redo commands. If the box is not selected, you cannot undo individual steps.  You would have to be pretty brave NOT to check it. LOL

  • Limit undo to XMB:  If you have a small hard drive or a large one with little space you may want to check this one.  I don't because I like to be able to go way back through the undo's if necessary, especially when writing tutorials.

  • Limit the steps:  Again, same as limiting to the MB space.  But this is the steps.

  • Compress the undo/redo:  If you are short on space this is great, personally I don't have it checked since I have plenty space.  It saves space but slows down PSP considerably.
