For this tutorial we need to work with an existing image. I am using
on you can find on the
resources page if you like or choose one of your own if you rather.
Choose the lasso tool again if it is not already selected. Click the
control palette and then click the arrow next to the selection type
and select the smart edge option from the menu. Make sure that antialias
is checked and set the feather to "0" for now. (Fig.1) Now
what we are wanting to do is select something in the picture to isolate
it from the rest of the image. Smart edge works by "thinking and
looking" at the pixel area you have selected and then applying
the selection to blend with the closest colors. We are going to remove
the lady on the left side of the image. Find yourself a starting point,
I usually start at the top or bottom. When using this tool you will
find it helps to zoom in on your image in the area you are working.
The secret is to get the center of the box that you will see once you
click over the area where you want to remove from. I zoomed in on mine
in figure 2, this is her shoulder area just below the collar of her
coat. Once you have went all the way around the lady then double click
to set the selection and you should then see your marching ants surrounding
your lady. (Fig.3)

Next set that image off to the side for a moment and open a new image
500 x 500, white background and 16 million colors. Click back on the
image of the lady and choose EDIT and then cut. The selected part of
your image is now on your clipboard. Click the new image you just opened
and choose EDIT and then paste as new selection. Place the selection
towards the far left side of the canvas and then right click once to
deselect. You should now have your lady on the left side of canvas,
deselected.(Fig.4) Now looking back at the original image where we removed
the lady from. You see the hole where she was at. This should be the
same color as your background color in your color palette. Mine was
hot pink, hee hee.(Fig.5) Choose edit and then undo and the lady should
reappear on your image with the marching ants around her. Then choose
SELECTIONS and feather, set to 2 and click OK. The marching ants should
have "expanded" to a little larger size than you originally
selected. (Fig.6) Then choose copy this time from the edit menu, notice
this time the image did not disappear and the background color show?
When cutting you will completely remove the selection, copying does
just that and leaves the original intact. Now click the title bar on
the new image again and choose the EDIT and paste as new selection again
and place it beside the other one. (Fig.7)
